The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

Winner of the Newbery Medal in 2017, this book was recommended as a possible read for Year 4 children. I think that it is more appropriate for Year 5’s and 6’s. There is no question that the book is beautifully written, nor that it holds one’s attention, yet the usual Year 4 child is not at this level of comprehension. Perhaps the length of the book is also prohibitive. Personally, I loved it, and recommend it for upper primary. (Even if the start is traumatic – tearing a baby off its screaming mother and then leaving it in the woods to be eaten by animals.)
